Advertising Guidelines
Ensure your promotions are effective and meet our community standards.
1 Visual Standards
The 20% Text Guideline
To keep the experience clean and engaging for all users, ad images should carry less than 20% text coverage. Put the detail in your caption or post body instead of crowding the image. This is a guideline applied by a person during review, not an automated check: we do not measure text coverage automatically, and a creative that exceeds it is not rejected automatically either. A reviewer can still ask you to change it.
- Use high-quality, professional photography.
- Keep text concise and place detailed info in the caption.
- Avoid cluttered designs or heavy overlays.
2 Prohibited Content
Island Index prohibits the promotion of the following content:
3 What Counts as Advertising
Advertising on Island Index covers any paid promotion that surfaces your business to a broader audience. This includes:
- Boost Post (Feed) - promoted posts that appear in users' feeds alongside organic content and link to your page, product or offer.
- Premium Banners - rotating placements. The banner appears at the top of the page and in the right sidebar, and the layout adapts to desktop and phone screens, so a separate mobile image is used where the design calls for it.
- Boost Page - promotes your business page as a card in the feed using its existing logo and details (MVR 10/day).
- See the Advertising & Delivery Disclaimer for pricing, equal rotation, estimates and reporting.
4 Getting Started
- Create or open your business page and make sure your profile is complete (logo, description, contact details, opening hours).
- Choose a promotion type (feed boost, banner, sponsored page or highlighted listing) that fits your goal.
- Set your media and text. Follow the visual standards below and keep your headline clear and honest.
- Review the creative against the visual and text standards below, and make sure your headline and offer are accurate.
- Choose a duration and budget, then submit for review. Every campaign is reviewed by a person before it goes live. Start and end dates are fixed at the point of booking and are not changed afterwards. Review timing varies with how many campaigns are queued, so we cannot promise a specific turnaround or a same-day approval.
5 Visual & Text Standards
Well-designed promotions perform better and keep the community experience clean. Please follow these standards:
- Keep text below 20% of the image area as a guideline, and put detailed information in your caption or post body.
- Use high-resolution, original images that reflect your actual products or services.
- Write a clear, honest headline that matches what your customer will actually receive.
- Avoid loud, flashing, or distorted effects that could be distracting or trigger photosensitivity.
- Do not imply partnership or endorsement by Island Index unless you have written approval.
6 Audience & Placement
You choose where your promotion appears. Audience targeting is not currently available: there is no option to target a specific category, atoll, island or user group, so a campaign is shown to the general audience in the placement you select.
- Boost Post (Feed) - a promoted post in the main feed that sends people to your page, product or offer.
- Boost Page - promotes your own business page as a feed card using its existing logo and details, so no separate creative is needed.
- Premium - a banner placement where you supply a desktop image and a mobile image, and the one matching the visitor's screen is shown.
Every live promotion in a placement gets an equal turn: price and duration do not buy a larger rotation share. The estimate shown in the ad builder is based on recent traffic divided by live ads; actual delivery varies with traffic and competition. We do not promise a minimum number of impressions, clicks, results, sales or conversions.
7 Pricing & Billing
- You are charged at the rates shown when you place your promotion. The price does not change your rotation share.
- You can choose a promotion duration (e.g. days or weeks) before confirming.
- You will not be charged if your promotion is rejected before it starts.
- Duplicates of the same promotion (same media and text) are not allowed while one is already live or pending.
- All sales are final once a promotion has gone live. No refunds for live promotions.
8 Review & Moderation
- Every promotion is reviewed before going live.
- Every campaign is reviewed by a person, and we will notify you of the outcome. Review time varies with how many campaigns are queued, so we cannot promise a specific turnaround.
- If your ad is rejected, the reason will be shared with you so you can fix and resubmit.
- We may pause or remove any live promotion that violates these guidelines, with or without a refund depending on the case.
- We may restrict advertising for accounts with repeated violations.
9 Performance & Analytics
- Track impressions, clicks, and engagement from your ad dashboard.
- Use the insights to refine your media, headline, and audience for better results.
- Pro tip: clear, benefit-led headlines and authentic images usually outperform heavily-designed graphics.
